Sarah Lieber is Managing Director and Co-Head of the litigation finance business at Stifel Nicolaus, a global investment bank. She has a unique market position of originating, investing-in, syndicating, and trading litigation-focused investments. Sarah and her team also act as the secondary market maker for the litigation funding industry. Since joining Stifel, Sarah and her team have syndicated and managed more than $1.5B in litigation investments, with partners ranging from hedge funds, alternative asset managers, private equity, insurance companies, large family offices, and traditional litigation funders. Their unique and structured approach has helped institutionalize the asset class in a way that provides borrowers with facilities more akin to traditional commercial lending, and provides investors the flexibility to put more money to work and fit varying investment needs.
Prior to joining Stifel, Sarah was the Co-Head of the Litigation Finance Group at Jefferies. Before Jefferies, Sarah ran investment origination at Burford Capital, the largest publicly traded litigation funder.
In addition to her litigation finance and investment expertise, Sarah is trained as a commercial litigator. She spent the first decade of her legal practice in the Financial Litigation and Trial Practice Groups at Jones Day in New York, where she specialized in litigation surrounding M&A, securities and structured financial products. Thereafter she served as Deputy General Counsel and head of litigation for monoline bond insurer, CIFG Assurance, where she was responsible for building a broad litigation program resulting in recoveries to insurer of nearly a billion dollars in losses incurred during the financial crisis.
